Mimic

Mimic

from Chris Merritt:

Pixie And The Bear (2008)

disc one

Tonight we’re gonna mimic the sights
We’re gonna mimic, mimic the fights
We’re gonna mimic, all right
We’re gonna bring it, bring it
Hey mom, you know it has been so long since you picked up the phone and isn’t that wrong?
You know, I sing the same song you’re singing on your own, alone

Do you get quiet? Do you feel the weight of your brain up above?
Do you lose sight? Do you keep away from the people you love?
The sweetest loving for my money is a conversation
The little jabs that make it funny give me aggravation

I’m doing the things you used to do
I’ve turned off my phone, I’m avoiding attention
A little baby’s eyes are going blue, big surprise

Today we’re gonna mimic the way
We’re gonna mimic, mimic the pain
We’re gonna bring it today
We’re gonna mimic, mimic

Hey there, is this a little unfair?
I’m feeling down, I can’t imagine you care
Is anybody out there?
Or are you just another mimic

Do you get quiet? Do you feel the weight of your brain up above?
Do you lose sight? Do you keep away from the people you love?
The sweetest loving for my money is a conversation
The little jabs that make it funny

I’m doing the things you used to do
I’ve turned off my phone, I’m avoiding attention
A little baby’s eyes are going blue, big surprise

I’m saying the things you used to say
I’m locked in my room, I’m starved for attention
A little baby’s eyes are going blue, big surprise
Going blue, big surprise
Going blue, no surprise there

Tonight we’re gonna mimic the fight
We’re gonna mimic, mimic

Original demo in “Media”.

I like this song. The Killer’s manager told me to never play this song for a music business person again because of the “changing key signatures and changing tempos”. Of course, it never changes keys or tempos. I think he meant time signatures, at the beginning, which you could even argue doesn’t really change, as 7 + 9 evens out to 16. Anyway. Interesting things don’t interest morons.

He had us out to Vegas for a showcase. He had two women around his arms and mostly ignored our set. It was one of the best shows we ever played, and it seemed to make him angry. He said, “You’re good, you know you’re good, don’t you.” And I said, “Yeah.” And he said “don’t ever play that first song for a record label again….now that Virginia song has something to it, but it’s too country….” He probably said other stuff but I was completely tuned out after that.

Phenomenal video by writer/director Tony Peterson with director of photography Cole Webbley.
