The Long Road

The Long Road

from Chris Merritt:

Pixie And The Bear (2008)

disc two

I see you, you can stop trying to hide
There’s a twinkle in your eye and it’s giving you away
Get with it lady, stop trying to hide
There’s a demon by your side and you’re never gonna catch me

I took the long road
I took the longest way
I took the wrong road
I took the wrongest way

I’m sorry I was blinded by my love and I thought that I was tough
But there’s nothing gonna change me
I see you in the corner with the ropes down, waiting for the next round
You’re never gonna get me

I took the long road
I took the longest way
I took the wrong road
I took the wrongest way
Yeah
I took the long road
I took the longest way
I took the wrong road
I took the wrongest way

I knew it when I heard you say cocaine
I knew it when we ran into your boyfriend
Out there on the street, with his new girl
And we were stuck with what he left you
Mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm
Now we’re being wounded by the fray
I thought that there was hope, I thought that I could cope
But the more I try to swallow this the more I just choke
This is not a joke, this is not a joke
I can feel the rope tighten on my throat
And is there another way?
We made it through the day
But still you’re smiling and I’m thinking that we’re doing okay
But then crying and remembering and now we’re up late
(Open your eyes)
And my eyes are barely open and I’m hearing you say
Can you see me straight?
Can you see me straight?
Do you see me straight?
Do you see me straight, or am I a blurry line?
Oh, but can you see me straight?
Do you see me straight?
Can you see me straight?
Do you see me straight, or am I a blurry line?

I took the long road
I took the longest way
I took the wrong road
I took the wrongest way
Hey
I took the long road
I took the longest way
I took the wrong road
I took the wrongest way

Todd Gummerman had a great vision for this, and did a great production job. He also convinced me to take the original demo and make it longer. I fought him on it, but it turned out cool. The original demo is in “Media”.

I think it’s way different, of course. I still kind of like the simplicity of the original demo, but this bridge is just crazy.

This was my favorite of my own tracks for a while. This song and Whole from Disc One are maybe my all-time favorites
from Pixie And The Bear. Sometimes I doubt myself and for a while I really doubted this whole album and thought it was a
giant piece of crap. But I never really doubted Long Road and Whole.

The original demo:

Also, here’s another demo that talks about long roads, called Long Long Road. It doesn’t really have anything to do with anything but I always liked this one:
