Whole

Whole

from Chris Merritt:

Pixie And The Bear (2008)

disc one

Always, always
All my love for you
All my love for you, always
You’re sleeping down the hall
I’m throwing chairs against the wall
You’re softly catching wink
I’m smashing dishes in the sink

Well sometimes we’re cruel
Yeah, sometimes we curse
But always we come back whole again
Always we end up whole again

Rainbows all over your body
Take my hand in yours
Lift me from the floor
Heal me
I see you might be sore
You got your foot caught in the door
You turn white as the snow
I’m turning purple as your toe

Well sometimes we swell
Yeah, sometimes we burst
But always we come back home again
Always we end up whole again

Oh, what do you want? what do you need? baby, what do you think? what do you want?
Oh, what do you want? what do you need? lady, what do you think? what do you want?
You don’t owe me anything
Somebody better remember that
You don’t owe me anything
Baby, you better remember that
Right on
You never know
(Come on I’m on your side, these cigarettes are wiggin’ me out)
Baby, you gotta remember this

Sometimes we starve
Yeah, sometimes we thirst
We never see that always we come back whole again
Always we end up whole again
Always we come back whole again
Always we end up whole again
We end up whole again
We end up whole again

This is maybe the song I’m most proud of on this record. This is the first song I discoved 5/4 is the best time signature for sad ballads, which I think I discovered. 7/4 is good too, I now know.

The instrumental break-down represents the tightest trio I’ve ever played in, Dustin Hoffheins on bass guitar and Tim Fellow on drums. It’s cool that we captured this at the peak of our abilities as a band, and this was all tracked live! At least, the piano/bass/drums. I overdubbed vocals, toy piano, rhodes, synths, all kinds of keyboards.

If you listen, you can hear us all break into different time signatures at some point in the instrumental section.

The bass holds down the 5/4, while the drums go into a straight 4, and I go into a 3/8 thing. We finally come back together after a few times through, as we all hit the downbeat at the same time, and there’s a big explosion there.
