Wire

Wire

from Chris Merritt:

Virginia Is For Hoverers (Part II) (2010)

Move your feet and grok my beat / I’m a cold-blooded killer, so where’s my meat?

And it feels just like I’m walking on a wire over lion and shark / Yeah it feels just like I’m walking on a wire over fire and spark

I don’t really want to go anywhere else / I don’t really want to go anywhere else / I don’t really want to know anything else about this world

I could see you were just like me / I can tell you like could never even wanted you to see my freak / In the night I meet my friend / She was nice like a lay, she burned my end

And it feels just like I’m walking through the mire but the fire is deep / So there isn’t any way I’m going to tire on the mountain so steep / And it feels just like I’m walking on a wire over lion and shark / Yeah it feels just like I’m walking on a wire over fire and spark

I don’t really want to go anywhere else / I don’t really want to go anywhere else / I don’t really want to know anything else about this world

There are a couple versions of this. The entire song was written in about fifteen minutes. Driving over the Blue Ridge Mountains, I fleshed out the lyrics for the pre-chorus in my head. I always felt this song was unfinished. I never thought to even take it anywhere, but Brett liked it, and he has a knack for pickin’ ‘em.

We re-recorded a version of this that is ultimate.

My dad sometimes uses singular nouns for plural nouns while speaking, a common thing in the country. For example, “I’ve seen plenty of bear around here lately.” Or, “Around this time of year, you see a lot of vulture.” Or, “You got your city Liberal, they’re all over the place.” I’ve always really liked that pattern of speech, so I imitated it in the pre-chorus of Wire. “It feels just like I’m walking on a wire over lion and shark.” And then even more extreme, “Yeah it feels just like I’m walking on a wire over fire and spark.”
